As an advocate for a ‘less is more’ approach, I have followed closely the arts and craft directive of avoiding excessive ornamentation. However, I wanted to try my hand at using motifs on these jewelry boxes and jewelry chests. First I choose the subject matter for my jewelry box or jewelry cabinet and do a series of line drawings until I get the most appealing scale. Then I begin to design the custom jewelry cabinet around the motif. One of the tricks is to get the drawer divisions to occur in places where they won’t interrupt the flow of the motif on the face of the custom jewelry box. Then I decide if the motif can accommodate a pull or if the pulls will need to be incorporated into the shape of the drawer front of the jewelry box.
